What is a Marketing Consultant?

I'm often asked, what it is that I do or why do I need a marketing consultant? The truth is that not all marketing consultants are the same and each individual will have a different approach on how they handle their clients. If I had to give one general answer to the question as to, what is a marketing consultant, I would say that a marketing consultant is a person that can help develop a strategy for a business and the key being that the consultant asks the questions that are not being asked.

This is where a marketing consultant is able to answer the question, why do I need a marketing consultant? A main reason you may need a marketing consultant is because he/she is able to look at your business from an unbiased view and ask the questions you're not asking. You may not be asking the questions because you don't know what the questions are or maybe because you're afraid to ask them.
A good marketing consultant gets to know your company from both an internal and external perspective. From an internal view, a marketing consultant may interview your employees and ask them what the work environment is like, how is customer service handled by employees, or even what they think about management.

All these are important questions to ask and if a manager or owner asks the same question, they may get a different answer than a marketing consultant would. It is important for a marketing consultant to determine any discrepancies within the internal processes of a business. I've worked with several business owners and something I can tell you from experience, an owner may think business is great but the reality is much harsher than expected.

Externally, a marketing consultant should know what the consumer has to say about their clients business. In the marketing world we call this consumer behavior. Knowing what motivates the consumer to make a purchase and become loyal customers is very important to any business. A marketing consultant should know who the target market is, how to reach them, and how to convert them into customers. To do this, a marketing consultant may ask for a detailed list of the collected data that the business has on its customers. Another option may be to ask frequent customers what they thought of the customer service they received.
Are you starting to understand what a marketing consultant really is?

In summary, a marketing consultant is a person that gets to know the ins and outs of your business. Only after knowing your business can a marketing consultant create a marketing plan that is strategically implemented for your business.
